The Finnish IT Centre for Science protects one of the most powerful super-computers in Europe with Eaton’s Powerware UPS

The Finnish IT center for science, CSC, selected Eaton’s UPS solutions for its new supercomputer’s data centre. The supercomputer’s power supply and data centre cooling are secured with Powerware 9395 UPS devices, the most powerful and efficient device of its kind on the market.

Finnish scientists have been presented with a supercomputer that will take the available computing power to a completely new level in the spring of 2008. This enhanced computing power enables the scientists to study phenomena that were previously out of their reach. The Finnish supercomputer has been ranked as one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. In the final configuration, the theoretical top performance surpasses 70 Tflops.

The system has a power consumption mode that places particular demands on the power supply and data centre cooling. The computer takes 20 racks of space, and uses 420 kilowatts of power. The essential requirements for the UPS were technical quality, good efficiency rate and dependable maintenance.

Eaton delivered a three 550 kVA Powerware 9395 UPS units to protect the supercomputer. The uninterrupted power supply to the cooling system is secured with two 275 kVA Powerware 9395 units.

The Powerware 9395 is Eaton’s most powerful UPS, and no one has offered as reliable a power supply so far,” tells Jari Nieminen, Eaton’s product manager.
