Eaton's Powerware BladeUPS to power Beijing Olympic Games 2008

PK Electronics, a Belgian distributor for power protection, recommended Eaton’s Powerware BladeUPS® to Alfacam for its mobile recording studios that will broadcast the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 worldwide. The Belgium-based Alfacam provides TV facilities and services to broadcasters and production houses.

Alfacam’s contract for broadcasting Beijing 2008 is worth around EUR 12 million. According to Alfacam spokesperson Yves Panneels, this is the biggest facilities contract for a single event in the history of television.

Powerware BladeUPSs will be deployed in each of the 18 mobile recording studios, where they will be responsible for providing uninterruptible power for the entire broadcasting and recording operation.

The Eaton concept of having modular UPSs that are easy to ship and repair worked as an obvious advantage. The mobile recording studios will have both systems that work in parallel and stand-alone, but if needed all the systems can be transformed to work in parallel. Naturally, Alfacam will be able to use the equipment for other events after the Beijing Olympic Games.

Alfacam will be the biggest technical production company for the Olympic Games television images. The company will have more than 100 technicians, 18 mobile recording studios and 200 television cameras in Beijing, where it will capture all the main disciplines at various locations, including the opening and closing ceremonies.
