The National Supercomputer Centre in Sweden installs Eaton’s three phase UPS’s to Linköping University

The National Supercomputer Centre in Sweden (NSC) has chosen Eaton to supply uninterruptible computing power for its new data centre located in Linköping. The NSC is an independent organisation within Linköping University that provides high performance computing resources and support to users throughout Sweden, mainly academics from the fields of physics and chemistry.

NSC is funded by the Swedish Research Council via SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing). A new grant from the Council enabled NSC to build a more powerful data centre which, being three times larger than the old data centre, offers significant increase in capacity. NSC has also a long-term partnership with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and Saab AB.

NSC belongs to a large international network of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). In practice this means active participation and contributions to the research, which requires a vast amount of data to be moved and stored. The new data centre provides the increased storage capacity required for this important field of study.

“Both the number of customers and the amount of data in our systems have steadily been going up in recent years. The new data centre improves our operations significantly. NSC is a service organisation, after all,” says Niclas Andersson, Assistant Director, NSC.

Eaton supplied NSC with four Powerware 9390 160 kVA UPSs, one 80 kVA UPS with batteries, and an Environmental Rack Monitor (ERM). The smaller UPS is predominantly meant for securing uninterruptible power for the centre’s air conditioning.

“There are not that many companies that have as large and as modern equipment as Eaton. These two facts, as well as the excellent energy efficiency of the equipment and its ease of expansion in the future if needed, made Eaton a preferred partner. We have been extremely happy with the data centre and the enlarged capacity it has brought for us and our customers,” Andersson says.
